The evaluation team consisted of Dr. Sarina from the Alxa Desert UNESCO Global Geopark (China) and Dr. Katori Takuma from the Agency for Cultural Affairs of Japan and the Geological Society of Japan. During the mission, the evaluators conducted field inspections and carried out a comprehensive assessment of the geopark's management, geoheritage conservation, education, sustainable tourism development, and community engagement.
Korat UNESCO Global Geopark is located in Nakhon Ratchasima Province, Thailand, and was designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2023. The geopark is renowned for its distinctive cuesta landscapes, dry dipterocarp forest ecosystems, and rich palaeontological resources. Numerous fossils dating from approximately 16 million years ago to 10,000 years ago have been discovered in the area, including dinosaur fossils, ancient elephants, and many other prehistoric animals. In addition to its outstanding geological heritage, Korat also preserves the unique cultural identity and traditions of the Thai Khorat community.

The first revalidation mission in 2026 involved the active participation of government agencies, businesses, local authorities, educational institutions, local communities, and partner networks across five districts within the geopark. The close collaboration among stakeholders demonstrated the effectiveness of the community-based management approach and reflected the strong commitment of the local authorities and communities to maintaining the standards of a UNESCO Global Geopark while conserving and promoting the area's heritage through sustainable development.
At the conclusion of the mission, the UNESCO evaluators expressed positive views on the achievements of Korat UNESCO Global Geopark in geopark management, heritage conservation, and the promotion of its geological and cultural values. The official outcome of the revalidation process will be considered by the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council in Paris, France, in October 2026, based on the evaluators' report and recommendations.
Revalidation is a periodic UNESCO process designed to assess whether UNESCO Global Geoparks continue to meet the required criteria for designation. It also encourages geoparks to continuously improve their management, strengthen heritage conservation, and enhance the promotion of geological, natural, and cultural heritage through sustainable development. For Korat UNESCO Global Geopark, this first revalidation mission marks an important milestone in its development and provides an opportunity to further strengthen its management, expand international cooperation, and make greater contributions to the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network.
